Can I Fly Home After Lens Replacement Surgery Abroad in Prague

Yes. In most cases, it is safe to fly home the day after lens replacement surgery in Prague. Many of our patients from the UK, Ireland and across Europe return home after their post-operative check-up on Thursday morning. We also regularly treat patients travelling from the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and it is generally safe for them to undertake longer flights home after surgery.

Lens replacement surgery is one of the safest and most commonly performed eye procedures worldwide. The surgery is minimally invasive and performed through a very small incision, which allows for rapid healing and a quick recovery for most patients.

Before travelling home, every patient undergoes a thorough post-operative eye examination. During this appointment, the eye surgeon checks the healing process, measures vision, examines the eyes and confirms that it is safe to travel. Patient safety is always our highest priority, and patients are only cleared to fly when the surgeon is satisfied with their recovery.

Many patients are surprised by how quickly their vision improves. Although vision is typically blurry immediately after surgery, many patients already see very well at their first post-operative check-up the following morning. Some patients even describe their vision as being close to 20/20. Recovery is individual, however, and vision may continue to improve over the following weeks as the eyes heal and the brain adapts to the new lenses through a process known as neuroadaptation.

Before leaving Prague, patients receive detailed post-operative instructions together with a complete set of eye drops, including antibiotic eye drops. Our team carefully explains how and when to use the drops and how to care for the eyes during recovery.

For most UK and Ireland patients, the flight home is typically only one to three hours. However, we also regularly welcome patients from overseas destinations, including North America, Australia and New Zealand. Longer flights are generally not a problem after lens replacement surgery, provided the surgeon has confirmed that recovery is progressing as expected.

Some patients prefer additional peace of mind and choose to stay in Prague for an extra day or two. This is absolutely possible. If a patient stays until Friday and would like an additional eye examination before travelling home, we can arrange an extra check-up free of charge.

Our highly experienced refractive eye surgeons have collectively performed more than 100,000 eye procedures and will ensure you receive personalised advice based on your individual recovery and visual progress.
