I had lens replacment surgery in Prague arranged by Beauty in Prague. As to be expected I was a little anxious as this was my first time travelling to recieve medical treatment. The whole experience was very professional and seamless. The English speaking contact made sure I was well informed from the moment we landed to the time we left. The hospital/clinic was state of the art, and was very well run, all the nurses, doctors and surgeons spoke English and put you at ease. I am now 2 days after my operation and my vision is 20/20, I am extremely happy with the results and would highly recommend Beauty in Pragur to any anyone considering lens replacement surgery. I have video documented my trip online at thedamersgreatescape

Hi,hi can't fault the service at Beauty in Prague. A dedicated coordinator arranged and paid for all taxis to and from airport and clinic. Eye tests on first day only took an hour then had a free day before being booked in for op on third day. Everything went smoothly, had drops put in eyes to dilate and anaesthetise, then given a relaxing pill. Then into theatre and each eye only took about 10 mins. No pain at all during surgery. Straight after surgery right eye was perfect, left was a little cloudy and scratchy for a few hours. Next morning both eyes pretty much perfect. Day 4 had a check up and was cleared to fly home. No problem driving home from airport and I'm now typing this review without glasses which I've needed for years. Would definately recomend Beauty in Prague. First class service, a nice city break and a good saving over uk prices.

HSE Reimbursement Explained

How does HSE reimbursement work?

Under the EU Cross-Border Healthcare Directive, eligible Irish patients can travel to another EU country for medically necessary healthcare and apply for reimbursement from the HSE after returning home.

The process is straightforward:

  • You pay for your cataract surgery directly at our clinic in Prague.
  • After returning to Ireland, you submit your application and supporting documents to the HSE.
  • Once your application has been reviewed and approved, the HSE reimburses the eligible amount according to its current reimbursement rules.

Our experienced coordinators will guide you through the paperwork and explain which documents you need before and after your treatment.

Please note: HSE reimbursement is subject to eligibility, approval and the current reimbursement rules in force at the time of your application.

What documents will I need?

  • GP or ophthalmologist referral
  • Proof of your HSE waiting list (where applicable)
  • Invoice from the clinic
  • Proof of payment
  • Medical report provided after your surgery
  • Completed HSE reimbursement application

How long does reimbursement take?

Processing times vary depending on the HSE and the completeness of your application. Our coordinators will ensure you receive all the necessary documentation to help make the process as smooth as possible.

What Happens During Your Stay?

  • Day 1 – Sunday: Arrival in Prague: Arrive in Prague and enjoy a complimentary (FREE) airport transfer to your hotel. Relax and prepare for your treatment.
  • Day 2 – Monday: Comprehensive Eye Examination & Consultation: Our English-speaking patient coordinators will arrange a complimentary taxi from your hotel and will be waiting to welcome you at the eye clinic, ensuring your journey is as smooth and stress-free as possible.

You will spend approximately 2–3 hours at our private eye clinic, where you will undergo a comprehensive eye examination and advanced diagnostic testing. During your consultation, an eye doctor will carefully review the results with you, answer all your questions, and confirm the most suitable intraocular lens (IOL) based on your vision, lifestyle and eye health.

  • Day 3 – Tuesday: Enjoy Prague: Take the day to relax or explore the beautiful city of Prague. If you require specially ordered premium intraocular lenses, they will be delivered directly from the manufacturer in Germany in time for your surgery the following day.
  • Day 4 – Wednesday: Cataract Surgery: Your cataract surgery is performed on both eyes on the same day. The procedure typically takes 10–15 minutes per eye and is carried out under local anaesthetic using modern microsurgical techniques. After a short recovery period, your English-speaking patient coordinator will arrange a complimentary taxi to take you back to your hotel. You will be able to see immediately after surgery, although your vision will initially be blurred as your eyes begin to heal. This is completely normal. We recommend spending the rest of the day relaxing at your hotel and following your post-operative instructions carefully.

Most patients notice a significant improvement in their vision by the following day, when they return to the eye clinic for their post-operative examination. Before leaving the eye clinic, you will receive a complete set of prescribed eye drops, including antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drops, together with detailed instructions on how to use them over the following days and weeks to support a smooth recovery and achieve the best possible visual outcome.

  • Day 5 – Thursday: Post-operative Check-up & Departure: Return to the clinic for your post-operative examination, including vision testing, measurements and a consultation with your eye surgeon. Once your surgeon confirms that your eyes are healing well, you are free to fly home from Thursday afternoon. A complimentary airport transfer is included.

Can I stay an extra day?

Absolutely. While most Irish patients fly home on Thursday afternoon, many choose to stay until Friday for a more relaxed recovery and to enjoy another day in Prague. If required, an additional check-up can be arranged before your departure.

Recovery After Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is one of the safest and most successful eye procedures worldwide. Most patients notice clearer vision within the first few days, although every eye heals at its own pace. Following your cataract surgeon’s instructions and using your prescribed eye drops are essential for a smooth recovery.

Immediately After Cataract Surgery: Surgery Day (Wednesday)

Both eyes are operated on the same day.

On the morning of your surgery, you will enjoy breakfast as usual at your hotel before travelling to our private eye clinic. Your treatment begins with a 60–90 minute pre-operative preparation, during which you will change into a surgical gown and receive anaesthetic eye drops. If you feel anxious, we can also provide anti-anxiety medication.

The cataract surgery itself takes approximately 10–15 minutes per eye. During the procedure, your cloudy natural lens is removed and replaced with a clear artificial intraocular lens (IOL) through a tiny incision that usually requires no stitches.

Immediately after your Cataract surgery:

  • You will be able to see, although your vision may initially be slightly blurred as your eyes begin to heal.
  • You will receive a complete set of prescribed eye drops, including antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drops, together with detailed instructions on how and when to use them over the following days and weeks to support a smooth recovery and achieve the best possible visual outcome.
  • Our team will carefully explain your post-operative care and answer any questions before you leave the eye clinic.
  • Complimentary transfer back to your hotel is included.

We would also like to reassure our Irish patients that, following your post-operative examination the next day, it is generally safe to fly home. Cataract surgery is a minimally invasive procedure, and air travel after your surgeon confirms that your eyes are healing well is considered safe. Thousands of our international patients return home by air the day after Cataract surgery without any problems.

Many patients are pleasantly surprised by how comfortable the procedure is and spend the rest of the day relaxing at their hotel.

First 24 Hours

It is normal to experience:

  • Mild blurred vision
  • Watery eyes
  • Light sensitivity
  • A scratchy or gritty sensation

To help your eye heal:

  • Avoid rubbing or touching your eyes.
  • Rest and avoid strenuous physical activity.
  • Start using your prescribed eye drops exactly as directed.
  • Wear sunglasses outdoors if your eyes are sensitive to bright light.

The morning after surgery, you will return to the Prague eye clinic for a post-operative examination with an eye doctor. Most patients already notice a significant improvement in their vision at this stage.

The First Week

During the first week, your vision should continue to improve every day. Many patients are pleasantly surprised by how quickly they return to their normal daily routine.

During the first week you can usually:

  • ✅ Watch television
  • ✅ Read books or use your mobile phone
  • ✅ Go for gentle walks
  • ✅ Enjoy sightseeing and light daily activities
  • ✅ Travel home after your post-operative examination

During the first week you should avoid:

  • ❌ Rubbing or pressing on your eyes
  • ❌ Heavy lifting or strenuous exercise
  • ❌ Swimming pools, hot tubs and saunas
  • ❌ Dusty or dirty environments
  • ❌ Eye make-up until your surgeon advises it is safe

Continue using your prescribed eye drops exactly as instructed, even if your vision already feels normal.

The First Month

Healing continues over the following weeks as your eyes adapt to your new intraocular lenses.

During the first month:

  • Your vision gradually stabilises.
  • Colours often appear brighter and more vivid.
  • Your brain continues to adapt to your new vision.
  • Most patients can enjoy their normal daily activities without restrictions.

Continue attending any recommended follow-up appointments and complete your prescribed course of eye drops.

When Can I Drive?

Do not drive immediately after cataract surgery.

You may resume driving once:

  • your vision meets the legal driving standard in Ireland,
  • your eye surgeon confirms it is safe,
  • and you feel comfortable driving.

Many patients are able to drive again within a few days, although recovery varies from person to person.

Flying After Cataract Surgery

One of the questions we are asked most frequently is whether it is safe to fly home after cataract surgery. The answer is yesFollowing your post-operative examination on Thursday, your eye surgeon will carefully check that your eyes are healing well before confirming that you are fit to travel. Because cataract surgery is a minimally invasive procedure, most Irish patients are able to fly home from Thursday afternoon. If you prefer a more relaxed schedule, you are welcome to stay until Friday.

Eye Drops After Cataract Surgery

Before leaving the clinic, you will receive a complete set of prescribed eye drops, including:

  • Antibiotic eye drops to help prevent infection.
  • Anti-inflammatory eye drops to reduce inflammation and support healing.

Our team will explain exactly when and how to use each medication. To achieve the best possible results:

  • use your eye drops exactly as prescribed,
  • wash your hands before applying them,
  • never stop treatment early unless instructed by your surgeon,
  • contact us if you have any questions.

Follow-Up Care

Your first post-operative examination takes place the morning after your cataract surgery at our private eye clinic in Prague. During this appointment, an eye doctor will carefully examine your eyes, check that your vision is improving as expected and perform the necessary measurements to ensure your recovery is progressing well. This examination is also important to confirm that your eyes are healing normally and that it is safe for you to fly home.

Before leaving the clinic, you will receive:

  • A complete FREE set of prescribed eye drops, including antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops, together with detailed instructions on how and when to use them over the coming days and weeks.
  • A comprehensive medical report summarising your examination, surgery and post-operative findings, which you can share with your ophthalmologist or optometrist in Ireland for any future follow-up care.

Your invoice for the Cataract surgery is provided on Monday, following your comprehensive eye examination and consultation, once your eye surgeon has confirmed the most suitable intraocular lenses for your eyes and your treatment plan has been finalised. If everything is healing well, you are free to fly home from Thursday afternoon. However, many patients choose to stay until Friday to enjoy a more relaxed recovery before travelling.

Good to know

Most Irish patients return home on Thursday afternoon, less than 24 hours after surgery. Following your post-operative examination, an eye doctor will confirm that your eyes are healing well and that you are fit to travel. Thanks to the minimally invasive nature of modern cataract surgery, flying home the next day is routine for the vast majority of our international patients.

Premium Intraocular Lenses (IOLs)

At Beauty in Prague, we use high-quality intraocular lenses from leading manufacturers such as ZEISS and Alcon, trusted by eye surgeons worldwide for their excellent optical performance and long-term reliability. Following your comprehensive 2–3 hour eye examination and consultation with an eye doctor, we will recommend the most suitable lens based on your vision, lifestyle, eye health and personal expectations.

  • Monofocal Lenses

Monofocal lenses provide excellent vision at one distance, usually for far vision. Most patients will still require reading glasses for close work.

Best for: Patients looking for a reliable and cost-effective solution.

  • EDOF Lenses (Extended Depth of Focus)

EDOF lenses, such as Alcon Vivity, provide an extended range of vision with fewer visual disturbances than multifocal lenses. Many patients enjoy excellent distance and intermediate vision while requiring reading glasses only for very small print.

Best for: Active patients who want greater independence from glasses with minimal halos and glare.

  • Trifocal Lenses

Trifocal lenses provide clear vision at near, intermediate and far distances, significantly reducing the need for glasses in everyday life.

Best for: Patients who would like to be as independent from glasses as possible.

  • Toric Lenses

Toric lenses are designed to correct astigmatism and are available in monofocal, EDOF and trifocal versions.

Best for: Patients with corneal astigmatism who want the best possible quality of vision.

Which lens is right for me?

The most suitable intraocular lens can only be recommended after your 2-3 hours comprehensive eye examination and consultation in Prague. Our experienced eye doctors will carefully assess your eyes, discuss your lifestyle and visual expectations, and recommend the lens that is best suited to your individual needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Eligibility & HSE

Do I qualify for HSE reimbursement for cataract surgery abroad?

You may be eligible if you live in Ireland, have a referral from your GP or ophthalmologist, are on an HSE cataract surgery waiting list, and your treatment qualifies under the EU Cross-Border Healthcare Directive. Eligibility and reimbursement are always subject to HSE rules.

Do I need to be on an HSE waiting list?

Yes. To apply for reimbursement under the Cross-Border Healthcare Directive, you should be on an HSE cataract surgery waiting list before travelling for treatment.

How much can HSE reimburse for cataract surgery?

The amount reimbursed depends on the HSE reimbursement rates and your individual treatment. The final reimbursement decision is made by the HSE. We recommend checking the current reimbursement information on the official HSE website before applying.

(Toto je podľa mňa lepšie ako uvádzať konkrétnych €1,120, pretože HSE sadzby sa môžu meniť.)

How long does HSE reimbursement take?

According to the HSE, completed applications are usually processed within approximately 30 working days after all required documentation has been received. Processing times may vary.

What documents do I need to apply for HSE reimbursement?

According to the HSE, you will normally need:

  • a GP or ophthalmologist referral (or confirmation that you are on an HSE waiting list)
  • the completed HSE application form
  • proof of payment
  • your invoice
  • medical documentation from your treatment
  • the healthcare provider section of the HSE application form completed by our eye clinic, where required.

After your surgery, we will provide all medical documentation from our eye clinic required for your HSE reimbursement application. You then submit your application directly to the HSE.

Treatment & Travel

Can I travel alone?

Absolutely. Many of our Irish patients travel to Prague on their own. Our English-speaking patient coordinators will assist you throughout your stay, and complimentary airport and clinic transfers are included.

Is cataract surgery in Prague safe?

Yes. Cataract surgery is one of the safest and most successful procedures in modern medicine. Our EU-accredited eye clinic uses advanced diagnostic technology and premium intraocular lenses from leading manufacturers including ZEISS and Alcon.

How long do I stay in Prague?

Most patients stay from Sunday to Thursday.

  • Sunday – Arrival
  • Monday – Eye examination & consultation
  • Tuesday – Free day
  • Wednesday – Surgery
  • Thursday – Follow-up examination and return home

Many patients choose to stay until Friday for a more relaxed recovery.

Can both eyes be treated on the same day?

Yes. In most cases, we perform cataract surgery on both eyes during the same visit, allowing you to recover more quickly and avoid a second trip to Prague.

When can I fly home?

Most Irish patients fly home on Thursday afternoon after their post-operative examination, once the eye doctor has confirmed that everything is healing normally.

Can I drive after cataract surgery?

You should not drive until your vision meets the legal driving standard and your eye doctor confirms that it is safe to do so. This varies from patient to patient.

Vision & Lenses

Will I need glasses after cataract surgery?

This depends on the type of intraocular lens you choose. Many patients become much less dependent on glasses, while some may still need them for certain activities such as reading or very fine close work.

Are premium lenses covered by the HSE?

The HSE reimburses treatment according to its own reimbursement rules. If you choose premium intraocular lenses, such as trifocal, EDOF or toric lenses, you may need to pay the additional cost yourself. The exact reimbursement amount is determined by the HSE.

What if I have diabetes or glaucoma?

Many patients with diabetes or glaucoma can still have cataract surgery. During your comprehensive eye examination in Prague, the eye doctor will assess your eyes and advise whether cataract surgery is suitable for you.
