Can Cataracts Return After Lens Replacement Surgery - RLE abroad in Prague, Czech republic

ANSWER

No. Cataracts cannot return after Lens Replacement Surgery.

During Lens Replacement Surgery (also known as Refractive Lens Exchange or RLE), your natural lens is permanently removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). Because cataracts develop in the natural lens, they cannot form again once that lens has been removed.

This is one of the major long-term benefits of Lens Replacement Surgery. In addition to correcting vision problems such as presbyopia, long-sightedness, short-sightedness and astigmatism, the procedure also eliminates the future risk of developing cataracts.

Some patients may later experience a condition called Posterior Capsule Opacification (PCO), sometimes referred to as a “secondary cataract”. Despite the name, this is not a true cataract. It occurs when the thin membrane behind the artificial lens becomes cloudy months or years after surgery.

PCO is one of the most common long-term side effects following cataract surgery and Lens Replacement Surgery. Fortunately, it can usually be treated quickly and painlessly with a YAG laser procedure, which typically takes only a few minutes.

At our eye clinic in Prague, YAG laser treatment for PCO is offered free of charge within one year of surgery as a complimentary service for our patients.
