Why Patients Choose Refractive Lens Exchange in Prague
Before travelling to Prague, you will first have a free email consultation with the medical team of the eye clinic. We will ask you to complete a short medical questionnaire and send us your latest glasses prescription. This helps the eye doctors review your case and rule out any possible contraindications.
If suitable, we will offer available surgery dates that fit your schedule. There is no deposit required in advance — booking your flights to Prague is sufficient as confirmation of your appointments. We will also advise you on accommodation in Prague, ideally in Prague 1 or Prague 7, where free transfers to the eye clinic are provided. This usually includes at least 6 journeys during your stay. We will organise your free airport transfers as well.
Prior to your arrival, you will receive the contact details of your English-speaking patient coordinator, who will:
- assist you throughout your stay
- arrange free taxis for all appointments
- meet you at the clinic
- help with communication with the medical staff
Your coordinator will guide you through each step of your treatment in Prague.
Sunday – Arrival in Prague
You arrive in Prague. We arrange free airport transfer to your hotel or apartment.
Monday – Eye Examination (2–3 hours)
Early in the morning, you will attend a thorough 2–3 hour eye examination at the clinic, including detailed measurements and diagnostic tests. After the tests, you will have a consultation with the eye doctor, who will:
- explain your results
- confirm suitability for surgery
- recommend the most suitable intraocular lens
- answer your questions
Tuesday – Free Day
This day is kept free for you to relax, enjoy sightseeing, and explore Prague.
If the recommended intraocular lenses are not available in stock at the clinic, they are ordered after your Monday examination. These tailor-made lenses are typically delivered from Germany on Tuesday, ready for your surgery on Wednesday. This ensures your treatment is fully customised to your individual vision needs.
Wednesday – Surgery Day
Your refractive lens exchange surgery takes place on Wednesday morning.
- local anaesthesia only (anaesthetic eye drops)
- optional anti-stress tablet (Lexaurin) if desired
- both eyes treated on the same day — considered the safest approach for optimal visual results, faster recovery, and less stress (one procedure instead of two)
- procedure takes 10–15 minutes per eye
After surgery, your vision will be blurry but functional. You will still be able to see and walk normally. Our English-speaking patient coordinator will be at the clinic and arrange a free taxi back to your accommodation.
Thursday – Post-Operative Check-Up
The following morning, you return to the clinic for:
- post-operative eye examination
- vision check
- doctor consultation
- eye drops instructions
You will receive post-operative eye drops, including antibiotic drops, and full guidance on how to use them. Most patients already notice significantly improved vision at this stage.
Flying Home
It is safe to fly home on Thursday after the check-up. Patients from the UK, Ireland, USA, Canada, and Australia typically return home the same day.If you prefer extra reassurance, you may stay until Friday and we can arrange an additional check-up if needed.

What is Refractive Lens Exchange?
Refractive Lens Exchange is a procedure that improves vision by replacing the eye’s natural lens with an artificial intraocular lens tailored to your prescription. Unlike laser eye surgery, which reshapes the cornea, RLE works inside the eye and corrects vision at its source. This allows correction of reading vision, distance vision, and astigmatism in a single procedure. Because the natural lens is replaced, cataracts cannot develop later in life. RLE is most commonly performed for patients over 45 who experience presbyopia and want greater independence from glasses.
Is Refractive Lens Exchange the Same as Lens Replacement Surgery?
Yes. Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) is another name for Lens Replacement Surgery. The procedure is technically identical and uses the same intraocular lenses. The difference is mainly in terminology — RLE is often used when the procedure is performed for vision correction, while lens replacement is also used when treating cataracts. Learn more about Lens Replacement Surgery in Prague.
Who Is Refractive Lens Exchange Suitable For?
Refractive Lens Exchange in Prague is typically recommended for patients over 45 who want to reduce dependence on reading glasses, varifocals, or distance glasses. The procedure is especially suitable for people whose natural lens has started to lose flexibility with age.
You may be suitable for RLE if you:
- are usually aged 45 or older
- need reading glasses or varifocals
- want a long-term solution instead of changing glasses
- are not suitable for laser eye surgery
- have presbyopia (age-related reading problems)
- have hyperopia (long-sightedness)
- may have early cataracts
- want greater independence from glasses
Unlike laser eye surgery, refractive lens exchange replaces the aging natural lens itself. This means the result is stable long-term and cataracts cannot develop later.
What Vision Problems Can Refractive Lens Exchange Correct?
Refractive Lens Exchange can correct multiple vision problems in one procedure, depending on the type of intraocular lens used.
These include:
- presbyopia (reading vision)
- hyperopia (long-sightedness)
- myopia (short-sightedness)
- astigmatism (with toric lenses)
- early cataracts
This makes RLE a popular option for patients looking for a comprehensive vision correction solution rather than separate treatments. The exact recommendation is based on your eye measurements, prescription, and lifestyle needs.

• swimming pools, hot tubs, or sauna

Eye drops are used for several weeks after surgery to support healing and prevent infection. Most patients notice significantly improved vision within days.
