Yes, you can drive again after lens replacement surgery, also known as refractive lens exchange (RLE). The recovery advice is very similar to cataract surgery, as both procedures involve replacing the eye’s natural lens with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). You should only drive once your vision has stabilised, you meet the legal driving standard, and your eye surgeon confirms it is safe to do so. At Beauty in Prague, there is no need to drive during your treatment. We provide complimentary airport and taxi transfers throughout your stay, allowing you to focus entirely on your recovery. Once you return home, our surgeons generally recommend waiting 1–2 weeks before driving again.
Do I Need to Drive While I Am in Prague?
No. If you travel to Prague for lens replacement surgery, there is no need to hire a car or drive yourself at any stage of your treatment. To make your experience as comfortable and stress-free as possible, Beauty in Prague provides up to six complimentary taxi transfers during your stay in Prague (for accommodation in Prague 1 or Prague 7).
These include transfers between:
- Prague Airport and your accommodation in Prague 1 or Prague 7
- your hotel and the eye clinic
- your follow-up appointment
- your return transfer to Prague Airport
All transfers are organised for you by our English-speaking Patient Coordinator, so you never need to arrange transport yourself.
What Happens on the Day of Surgery?
Most international patients have their surgery on Wednesday. After your procedure, your vision may be temporarily blurred because of the eye drops and the normal healing process. For this reason, you should not drive after surgery. Instead, your English-speaking Patient Coordinator will arrange a taxi to take you safely back to your accommodation in Prague. You can simply relax and begin your recovery.
What Is My Vision Like Immediately After Lens Replacement Surgery?
Many patients are pleasantly surprised that they can already see immediately after lens replacement surgery, even when both eyes are treated on the same day. However, it is completely normal for your vision to be slightly blurred or hazy immediately after the procedure. This is caused by the eye drops used during surgery and the natural healing process.
Because your eyes may also be more sensitive to bright light, we recommend bringing a pair of sunglasses to wear when leaving the clinic, especially on sunny days.
What Happens the Following Day?
The morning after surgery, your English-speaking Patient Coordinator will arrange a complimentary taxi to collect you from your accommodation and bring you to the eye clinic for your post-operative examination. By this stage, many patients are pleasantly surprised by how much their vision has already improved. While your eyes are still healing, it is common for vision to feel significantly clearer than it did immediately after surgery.
At your post-operative examination on Thursday morning, many of our international patients describe their vision as clear and sharp, with some already achieving 20/20 (6/6) vision. However, recovery varies from person to person. While some patients experience excellent vision almost immediately, others may continue to notice gradual improvements over the following days or weeks as their eyes heal and their brain adapts to the new lenses through a process called neuroadaptation.
Following your examination, most patients are medically fit to fly home the same day, provided the refractive eye surgeon is satisfied with their recovery. To make your journey home as easy as possible, Beauty in Prague also provides a complimentary airport transfer, so there is still no need to drive at any point during your stay.
When Can I Drive After Returning Home?
Although many patients notice a significant improvement in their vision within the first few days, our surgeons generally recommend waiting 1–2 weeks after returning home before driving again. This allows your vision to stabilise and gives your eyes additional time to heal.
You should only resume driving when:
- your refractive eye surgeon has confirmed your recovery is progressing normally
- your vision meets your country’s legal driving requirements
- you feel confident judging distance and reacting safely in traffic
- you are comfortable driving both during the day and, if applicable, at night
Why Do We Recommend Waiting Before Driving?
Although many patients notice a significant improvement in their vision within the first 24 hours, it is normal to experience temporary visual symptoms during the early stages of recovery, such as:
- Mild blurred or fluctuating vision
- Increased light sensitivity
- Glare from bright lights
- Halos around headlights at night
- Small fluctuations in visual sharpness as your eyes heal
These symptoms are a normal part of the healing process and usually improve naturally over the following days or weeks.
Your brain also needs time to adapt to the new intraocular lenses. This process, known as neuroadaptation, allows your brain to learn how to interpret the new visual information provided by your premium lenses. As neuroadaptation progresses, many patients notice continued improvements in the clarity and quality of their vision, particularly in challenging lighting conditions and at different viewing distances.
For your safety, we recommend waiting until your vision feels stable, you are confident behind the wheel, and your surgeon has confirmed that it is safe for you to drive.

Final Thoughts
One of the advantages of travelling to Prague for lens replacement surgery is that you never need to drive during your treatment. Every transfer is organised by our English-speaking Patient Coordinators, allowing you to focus entirely on your recovery.
Once you are back home, your vision will continue to improve over the following days. For your safety, our surgeons generally recommend waiting 1–2 weeks before driving again, or until they have confirmed that your vision is suitable for driving.
The advice on driving after cataract surgery is very similar because both cataract surgery and refractive lens exchange (lens replacement surgery) involve replacing the eye’s natural lens with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL).
